Since 1954, Kibbles 'n Bits^® has been honoring ordinary dogs for outstanding achievements. Although only one dog each year earns the official "Dog Hero of the Year" title, Kibbles 'n Bits^® recognizes and appreciates the thousands of extraordinary deeds performed by dogs each year. The overall purpose of the contest is to recognize the bravery, intelligence and loyalty of "man's best friend."

During the past 48 years, Kibbles 'n Bits^® has honored many dogs for their heroic acts. The most popular acts of canine heroism include alerting homeowners to fires, saving families from carbon monoxide poisoning, pulling adults and children from lakes and streams, finding lost children and protecting people from other potentially harmful animals.

Dog heroes come from all breeds, backgrounds and locations. And they're not all pedigreed, either: more than a dozen past honorees have been mixed-breed dogs - more than any individual dog breed.
